Marte e Venere

2007

1200 × 255 cm

Plaster modelled on wood. Painted with pigments.

“Venus and Mars” — bas-reliefs, Tennis Club, Foro Italico, Rome, 2007

The alternation of smooth surfaces and graffiti, raised surfaces and two-dimensional planes creates a powerful interplay that recalls the strength of the Cubist approach, a strength deriving from a neo-primitive dimension, from which the historical movement itself drew inspiration.

The monochromatic dimension also contributes to this effect, animated by the different treatment of the surface, which captures and releases light in an alternating vibration of light and dark.

The icons on this panel, while having a strongly geometric structure, refer to organic, genital and archaic forms.

At the same time, the work enhances the surrounding architectural structure and draws the eye towards itself through a powerful centripetal force.
