De Rebus Naturae series
2026
Bust: 30 × 80 × 15 cm
Base: 50 × 50 × 90 cm
Bust in polystyrene and cement, covered with a sheet of plastic – jute ropes; pine root.
Wooden base covered with a sheet of plastic – adhesive tape.
Ecocidio is an accusation.
A headless, armless bust, entirely wrapped in a sheet of black plastic, is held in place by an interweaving of knotted ropes. The base, too, a parallelepiped covered with the same material and tightly sealed with black adhesive tape, participates in the same condition of suffocation and confinement.
At the centre of the belly, an almost spherical root emerges, formerly an anthill, the last testimony of a vital core surfacing from the artificial material.
The work presents itself as a contemporary funerary herm dedicated to Nature wounded by the hand of humankind. Plastic, a material symbolic of the Anthropocene, becomes a shroud enveloping both body and landscape.
Ecocidio belongs to Patrizia Trevisi’s De Rebus Naturae series, which denounces the devastation of ecosystems, the loss of biodiversity, and the contamination of land, water and air; phenomena not caused by natural catastrophes, but resulting from human actions. Within it, as an iconic figure of the Great Mother, the mutation and metamorphosis generated by these processes are manifested.
Created as a site-specific work for the Botanical Garden of L’Aquila, Ecocidio creates, through its contradictory presence, a visual and conceptual short circuit: a funerary presence in a place dedicated to the conservation of nature. From this tension emerges human hypocrisy and its great paradox: protecting fragments of nature within a privileged enclosure while, outside, ecocide continues.
