Dedicated to a dear friend who is no longer with us.
A Zen artist recommended that, in any case, even in the absence of inspiration and concentration, one should perform at least one daily gesture, make at least one mark, even a single brushstroke, in order to maintain continuity and discipline in one’s work until harmony with one’s creativity is regained. This work, created with this intention, was transformed, over the course of the painful year of the pandemic, into a metaphorical transcription of a life dried up and deprived of meaning in the daily passage of time. Each empty shell is a day lived, now emptied of life, an exoskeleton bearing witness to one’s intentions, desires, feelings and dreams. A calcified casing protecting memories that tend to merge as if into a single cascade, where every element is indicated yet, as time passes, forgotten.
Perhaps what remains is precisely that salvific daily gesture which offers no directions, demands no accounting, has no answers, but points us, in its very refusal to ask, towards the harmony of nothingness.
