“The term individuation can be translated as ‘becoming oneself’.” Jung
Individuation is a process of integrating the components of the personality, the completion of which represents the primary purpose of each person’s existence. The ultimate aim of this process is therefore the full affirmation of the Self, achieved through a true journey of discovery to understand who we really are, distancing ourselves from all external influences that separate us from our nature.
Idolo, in anthropomorphised form, personifies conflict within this process: the dynamic conflict between masculine and feminine, between the individual and distinctive elements of the person and the social ones, between one’s inner world and the external world. The identification of the Ego with a rituality conceived by the artist as a process aimed at suturing the wounds of an Ego fragmented and isolated in everyday life.
The conflicting dynamics of this inner struggle and the imbalances of opposing energies are expressed through the continuous emergence and withdrawal of volumes, the surfacing from the canvas of feminine or masculine elements, the stitching and sudden tears, which render the forms in a continuous, dramatic movement.
